NEW YORKERS FOR BETTER GOVERNMENT

New Yorkers for Better Government is a research and advocacy organization dedicated to educating New Yorkers about the dangers of self-serving public officials, the corrosive impact that political corruption has on government and the people it represents, and the need to establish safe work places for all public servants and elect leaders with character and integrity at all levels.

IN THE NEWS:

US Congress Joint Economic Committee Report:

If the United States government was as corrupt as Italy’s, gross domestic product (GDP) per capita would have grown 2.1 percentage points less every year. This has huge implications for Americans: if GDP per capita grew 2.1 percentage points less in 2016, output would have fallen by $1,170 per person.”

Former Congressman George Santos Pleads Guilty to Fraud and Identity Theft:

“Former U.S. Representative George Anthony Devolder Santos pleaded guilty today to committing wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. In pleading guilty, Santos, 36, of Queens, New York, admitted he filed fraudulent FEC reports, embezzled funds from campaign donors, charged credit cards without authorization, stole identities, obtained unemployment benefits through fraud, and lied in reports to the House of Representatives.”

Cuomo Legal Bills Have Cost N.Y. Taxpayers $25.4 Million and Counting:

“It should come as little surprise that Mr. Cuomo, a pugnacious Democrat whose bullying tactics won battles but few friends in New York, would embrace aggressive legal tactics as he seeks to defend himself against the sexual harassment suits and protect his political image as he contemplates a comeback. The surprise lies in who is footing Mr. Cuomo’s legal bills in these matters: New York taxpayers.”

Gov. Andrew Cuomo under fire for meddling in corruption investigation:

“Federal investigators and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s political foes reportedly want to get to the bottom of how and why the governor’s office interfered with the work of a short-lived corruption commission — a commission that Cuomo himself created.”

A look at crime and scandals in New York politics:

“When Andrew M. Cuomo left the governor’s mansion on Aug. 24, 2021, he became the third straight New York governor to depart under a cloud of controversy. Unfortunately, crime and scandal in New York politics doesn’t end there. From graft during the War of 1812, to sexting under the alias of Carlos Danger, the Empire state has a rich history of political scandal.”

Message from New Yorkers for Better Government

New Yorkers want leaders who are honest, who respect the people they serve and the people they serve with, and who are dedicated to protecting the most vulnerable and ensuring our communities are healthy and cared for properly. Above all, we want leaders who view politics and government as public service – not as a platform for career redemption, amassing power and influence, or exacting retribution.
